CAIR-Ohio Hosts Speaker on Interfaith Relations

(COLUMBUS, OH, 10/31/07) – The Ohio State University branch of CAIR-Ohio, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ohio chapter last week hosted an educational forum on the Islamic perspective on interfaith relations.

Dr. Jamal Badawi, Professor Emeritus at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, spoke to a group of about 60 students and community members which included people from diverse faiths.

“There is a lot of misinformation about Islam being perpetuated, especially this week,” said Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin, CAIR-Ohio president, in reference to the so-called “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” on campuses nationwide. “The opportunity to listen to Islamic scholars like Dr. Badawi was a great opportunity for the community to become educated, and it gave people the chance to ask questions about things they may have heard about Islamic teachings.”

The event was part of an effort by CAIR-Ohio’s Ohio State University branch, along with the MSA at OSU, to educate the community about Islam and counter incorrect information being perpetuated by other groups, especially during “Islamo-Facism Awareness Week.”

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 33 offices, chapters and affiliates nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
