On the April 28 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Corp.'s (CBN) 700 Club, host Pat Robertson referred to Islam as a "bloody, brutal type of religion." Following a report suggesting that those who convert from Islam could face hardships and even death sentences in some Middle Eastern countries, Robertson expressed concern that Americans, "especially the American left," need to "wake up" to the "danger" that Islam presents. He said that, in the past, Muslim invaders would kill "an unbeliever" if they would not convert to Islam and that today, "if somebody wants to leave Islam, they're going to kill them." Robertson continued: "Whoever heard of such a bloody, bloody, brutal type of religion? But that's what it is. It is not a religion of peace."

Robertson has frequently asserted that "Islam is not a religion of peace," as he did in the April 28 broadcast. For instance, as Media Matters for America previously noted, Robertson made similar comments on April 24 when he warned his viewers that "we are not listening" to what Islam "says," just as we did not listen to "what Adolf Hitler said in Mein Kampf."

WACHOVIA CLOSES ACCOUNTS OF MUSLIMS, ISLAMIC CHARITY
Urge Bank to Explain its Action Against American Muslims

(WASHINGTON, DC, 5/8/2006) - CAIR and the MAS Freedom Foundation today called on American Muslims and other people of conscience to urge Wachovia to explain and reverse its decision to close the accounts of several Muslims and the Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH) – a small, Northern Virginia charity that provides assistance to people of all faiths.

In November, 2005, Wachovia sent a letter to FAITH announcing that the organization's accounts would be closed in January, 2006. Wachovia had never previously expressed any concern about the charity. At all times during FAITH's several-year relationship with Wachovia the organization's accounts were in good standing.

Despite numerous attempts by FAITH to discuss the issue with Wachovia, the bank's position remains unsatisfactory. Wachovia Senior Vice President Jeraldine Davis said in a letter to the charity, "As you are aware the Bank's contract with FAITH provides that the Bank can close any customer's account at any time…The Bank has determined that FAITH does not fit the business profile of a customer with whom the Bank chooses to transact business."

"Wachovia's heavy-handed approach to this small community charity requires explanation,” said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. "Since 9/11, the American Muslim community has noticed disturbing trends within the national banking industry where law-abiding American Muslims are seemingly and summarily being denied service based solely on their name, religion or ethnicity."

Action Alert: Call Lawmakers to Oppose Anti-Palestinian Law

(WASHINGTON, DC, 5/9/2006) - CAIR today called on American Muslims and other people of conscience to urge their elected officials to oppose legislation which would effectively hurt millions of innocent Palestinians who have already been economically, socially and politically marginalized due to the current conflict.

A new United States House of Representatives resolution, H.R. 4681, and a newer Senate resolution, S. 2370, would impose a wide range of essentially punitive measures on the Palestinian Authority.

H.R. 4681 (The Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006) would impose measures to defend the Palestinian Authority and limit its ability to travel and operate unless it meets many requirements.

According to sources on Capitol Hill, the momentum for passing the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act (S. 2370 and H.R.4681) appears to be dissipating on Capitol Hill. The Bush administration announced several policy changes over the spring congressional recess that, in addition to longstanding U.S. policy, would make most provisions of both the Senate and House bills superfluous.

Under the legislation, if the Palestinian Authority government meets these requirements for "certification" then it can have continued funding. If not the new law would:

1. Bar all direct aid to the Palestinian Authority and not provide the President with any authority to waive the ban, even in the case where national security interests of the U.S. are at stake; 2. Bar all aid via NGOs except "to meet basic human health needs" specified as food, water, medicine, sanitation, etc; 3. Hold back owed dues to the UN in proportion to the UN's direct support for the Palestinian Authority; 4. Designate areas controlled by the PA (The West Bank and Gaza) to be a "terrorist sanctuary;” 5. Ban the issuance of visas to anyone affiliated with the PA; 6. Comprehensively bar both the PLO and PA from maintaining an "office, headquarters, premises, or other facilities or establishments" in the U.S.; 7. Require the President to direct U.S. representatives at International Financial Institutions (e.g., the World Bank, IMF) to use the voice, vote, and influence of the U.S. to block any aid to the PA.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED:

1) Call your U.S. Senators and ask them to oppose S. 2370 as being against the best interests of the United States;

2) Call your member of the House of Representatives and ask them to oppose H.R. 4681 as also being against the best interests of United States foreign policy.

The West needs to take the threat of fundamentalist, militant Islam more seriously, controversial British commentator Christopher Hitchens told a predominately older audience at the Geology Corner auditorium last night. In an hour-and-a-half program, the liberal-socialist contrarian with a wry British wit and a sharp English tongue offered up barbs against Osama bin Laden, Muslims, liberals and Jacques Chirac. In an at-times rambling, back-and-forth exchange with audience members, Hitchens also denounced organized religion.

“You don’t have to be paranoid, racist or a bigot to take alarm,” he said. “There is a civil war within Islam. We are not in a war on terror. We cannot be at war with an expression.”

Hitchens, an editor for Vanity Fair, described himself as an atheist and issued a sharp rebuke of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

“Of course, he’s not a prophet,” he said. “He’s an epileptic plagiarist.”

He said the Quran — Islam’s holiest book — was full of “evil fairly tales” that were “unimaginably recycled.”

“It’s a boring plagiarism of the worst parts of Christianity and Judaism,” he added.
