Good News Alert: Senate Takes Steps Toward Closing Gitmo

Close-Guantanamo-rallyCAIR thanks the hundreds of concerned citizens who responded to our action alert urging the Senate to ease such transfer provisions for Guantanamo Bay inmates.

Last week, the Senate took significant steps toward closing the prison at Guantanamo in their markup of the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NAA).

The Senate has adopted several NDAA transfer provisions that empower the Obama administration to move Guantanamo inmates to U.S. for trial, imprisonment or emergency medical treatment. Next steps for the Senate NDAA include adoption on the Senate floor and a conference with the House to negotiation differences between the two bills.

The House NDAA bans the transfer of inmates to the U.S. for any reason and includes a ban on transfers to Yemen.
