On Facebook, Va. GOP treasurer questions Muslim contributions to U.S. history

The treasurer of the Virginia Republican Party has questioned the contributions of American Muslims in a public Facebook posting that attacked a recent statement by President Obama.

Obama was marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, in which devout Muslims fast during daylight hours in order to reflect and spiritually renew themselves. The observance ends with Eid-al-Fitr, which fell on Tuesday in the United States.

"In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy," Obama said.

Bob FitzSimmonds, the GOP treasurer in Virginia and the chief deputy clerk of the Circuit Court in Prince William County, took issue with the president's sentiments.

"It is one thing to be gracious on religious holidays, but this is pure nonsense," he wrote. "Exactly what part of our nation's fabric was woven by Muslims? What about Sikhs, Animists, and Jainists? Should we be thanking them too?"

Ibrahim Hooper, the national communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said FitzSimmonds "should think back to 20 percent of the slaves bought to America who were Muslim. I think they may have had something to do with building our nation."(Read the full article)
