CAIR Asks Virginia Sheriff, GOP to Drop Anti-Muslim Event

screenshot twitter.com 2018 01 08 11 04 21 076(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/8/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on a Virginia law enforcement agency and the Republican Party in that state to drop an upcoming event featuring a representative of an anti-Muslim hate group, the leader of which claims a former CIA director was a “secret Muslim” and that Muslim hotel managers, cabbies and 7-11 workers seek to take over America.

CAIR says the Amherst County Republican Committee is hosting a January 9 event (8 p.m.) at the Amherst County Sheriff's Office by Chris Gaubatz, employee of Understanding the Threat, an Islamophobic hate group headed by the notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist John Guandolo. At Tuesday’s event, Gaubatz will offer his group’s debunked conspiracy theories about “jihadi networks in communities.”

“If Mr. Gaubatz wishes to spew his Islamophobic bile, he should rent a private venue without the sponsorship of a mainstream political party or the perceived endorsement of a law enforcement agency,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We ask both the Amherst County Republican Committee and the Amherst County Sheriff's Office to disassociate themselves from this hate event.”

The FBI is currently investigating an image tweeted by Guandolo’s hate group that purported to show the bombing of “CAIR HQ” in Washington, D.C. Guandolo, who has previously tweeted that “CAIR needs to be obliterated,” re-tweeted the bombing image on his personal account. Earlier this month, Guandolo tweeted that “Islam is evil & barbaric.”

Minnesota’s Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek has accused Guandolo of assaulting him during a national law enforcement conference earlier this year in Reno, Nev.

Among his many bizarre and Islamophobic claims, Guandolo has falsely claimed that:

  • U.S. mosques are planning armed attacks on law enforcement authorities and churches,
  • the Black Lives Matter movement is funded by “enemies of the United States,”
  • when a Delaware Imam (Islamic religious leader) touched his nose during the pledge of allegiance before a legislative session it was part of “civilizational jihad,”
  • former CIA Director John Brennan was a secret Muslim,
  • Muslims are “obligated” to lie,
  • Muslim hotel managers, cabbies and 7-11 workers seek to take over America,
  • it is “unprofessional” for officials to seek information about Islam from Islamic religious leaders (imams).

CAIR has in the past said Guandolo is putting local Muslim communities at risk by making the false claim that, “Mosques/Islamic Centers are organizing for armed confrontation with law enforcement, shoring up physical defenses where they see likely confrontation and increasing their pre-attack surveillances of churches and other targets.”

Backgrounder on Islamophobe John Guandolo:

CAIR’s profile of Guandolo documents his belief that America “is at war with Islam” and that major Muslim organizations and mosques are “preparing for combat.” Guandolo also claims there is inaction on the part of the U.S. government to counter this threat because people inside the Trump White House “have been co-opted by the bad guys.”

Earlier this year, Guandolo excused a terror attack on a London mosque because “people who are still sane” are “having to make very difficult decisions.”

In 2016, a Texas college canceled a similar event. The college’s decision came following a request by CAIR’s Dallas-Fort Worth chapter.

In 2015, CAIR welcomed the withdrawal of an FBI representative from an event in Texas that was initially sponsored by the anti-Muslim hate group ACT! for America and featured Guandolo.

Virginia’s Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy rescinded its approval of in-service training credits for state law enforcement scheduled to attend a training Guandolo was conducting in Culpeper, Va., after being made aware of his anti-Islam rhetoric.

A sheriff in Kansas decided not to partner with a citizens group sponsoring a Guandolo training after being informed of his conspiracy theories. When a journalist at Kansas’ Wichita Eagle covered the controversy, Guandolo accused the reporter of material support of terrorism.

A number of Arizona police departments decided not to send officers to one of Guandolo’s trainings.

Guandolo left the FBI shortly after reports surfaced that he had allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a key witness in a corruption trial targeting a member of Congress. In addition, he is documented as having falsified his credentials and work experience.

Major General Tony Cucolo, Commandant of the US Army War College, informed CAIR in an email: “Mr. Guandolo's claim (in print) that he teaches at the Army War College and any other references (e.g., online) identifying him as an adjunct instructor here are simply untrue.”

Good News Alert: CAIR Applauds Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh for Denying Requests to Disclose Confidential Voter Information

(BALTIMORE, MD, 1/4/18) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations(CAIR) today welcomed the dissolution of a problematic voter fraud commission that raised concerns about voter suppression and was widely believed to discriminate against minority communities.

Several states, including Maryland, refused to supply voter data. CAIR’s Maryland outreach department thanked that state’s Attorney General Brian Frosh for denying requests to disclose confidential voter information.

Maryland's election commissioner denied the request after Frosh robustly criticized the request as being designed to discourage and intimidate voters, and opined that disclosure of such classified voter information is prohibited by law.

15 states are refusing to hand over voter data to Trump's panned election commission — here's how every state has responded

In July 2017, Attorney General Frosh said in a statement:

“The assistant attorneys general representing the State Board of Elections have considered the request to the Board for the personal information of millions of voters and have determined that the requested disclosure is prohibited by law. I find this request for the personal information of millions of Marylanders repugnant; it appears designed only to intimidate voters and to indulge President Trump’s fantasy that he won the popular vote.”

“We applaud the principled leadership of state officials like Maryland Attorney General Frosh who blocked voter suppression efforts and helped dismantle this commission by denying its requests for private voter data,” said CAIR Spokesperson Dr. Zainab Chaudry. “As Americans, we must all be free to exercise our right to vote without fear of sensitive information being publicized, collected, or used against us in any way.”

Established on May 11, the ‘Presidential Commission on Election Integrity’ was formed via executive order following Trump’s repeated unsubstantiated claims that he lost the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election due to millions of illegitimate votes.

The commission’s appointed vice chair, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, had been successfully challenged in court numerous times over his voter suppression policies.

Civil rights organizations, including CAIR, were alarmed by reports that the commission was headed by individuals who favor voting restrictions rather than expanding access to the polls, and that the commission had a suppressive agenda that would make it more difficult for people to “register to vote, stay registered and cast ballots.”

Among the commission’s first actions was a request to a wide range of information about all registered voters in every state, including partial Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and voting history.

The coalition rally will demand that the U.S. government close Guantanamo Bay prison camp, end indefinite detention, stop torture, and immediately transfer cleared detainees. The coalition will call for an end to these abuses and stand together to resist and dismantle institutionalized Islamophobia -- a system of oppression that uniquely targets Muslims and that has made it possible for the prison to be in operation for more than a decade and a half, with numerous prisoners, all Muslims, being detained without trial. The coalition will also call for a just resolution for all those detained at Guantanamo and for the immediate transfer of the five detainees who have already been cleared to leave.

“Americans who believe in the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution cannot stand idly by while our government indefinitely detains 41 men -- many of whom have families and children -- at Guantanamo without charge or trial. The major test of any nation’s commitment to the rule of law and due process is how well it protects the human rights and dignity of not only its citizens, but also of foreign prisoners in its custody. President Obama failed in his signature promise to close this prison. President Trump threatens to keep Guantanamo open and fill it up again. Now is the time for advocates of justice to seek the closure of this prison,” said Nihad Awad, National Executive Director, Council on American-Islamic Relations

More than a decade after they were first captured, 41 men are still detained at Guantanamo; they bear the physical and psychological scars of torture and abuse. Five detainees have been approved by the U.S. government for transfer out of Guantanamo, and the vast majority of the rest of the population has never been charged with or convicted of a crime. Yet they remain indefinitely detained with no end in sight.

Coalition members include: Amnesty International, Center for Constitutional Rights, Close Guantanamo, CodePink, Council on American - Islamic Relations, Defending Rights and Dissent, Justice for Muslims Collective, National Religious Campaign Against Torture, No More Guantanamos, Reprieve, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition, Veterans For Peace, Voices for Creative Nonviolence, Witness Against Torture, World Can’t Wait.

CAIR: Trump’s Call for Imprisonment of Clinton Aide is Attempt to ‘Politicize’ DOJ

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/2/2018) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said President Trump’s call to jail a former aide of Hillary Clinton is an attempt to politicize the Department of Justice.

In a tweet this morning, Trump called for the imprisonment of former State Department aide Huma Abedin and wrote derisively of the “Deep State Justice Dept.” CAIR noted that in a recent interview, Trump said: "I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department."

“Calling for the imprisonment of political rivals is a clear attempt by President Trump to further politicize the Department of Justice,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “Every American who values the constitutional guarantee of due process should be outraged by the president’s statements.”

McCaw noted that the president is already facing accusations of multiple instances of obstruction of justice.
