(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 4/13/18) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on Oakland County prosecutors to “robustly” charge a man who discharged his firearm on an unarmed African-American teen.
On Thursday, the teenager went to a home in Rochester Hills asking for directions after becoming lost on his way to school. A man in the house reportedly brandished a firearm at the teen and then opened fire at him as he ran for his life.

The shooter is currently in law enforcement custody while prosecutors are deliberating potential charges.
“The shooter should be robustly charged according to our state’s criminal law for shooting at the unarmed teen who simply came to a home asking for directions,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “We suspect that the alleged shooter may have been motivated to attempt to murder the unarmed teen due to racial bias.”
Walid noted that CAIR-MI was involved in calling for justice in similar case when an unarmed black teen, Renisha McBride, was fatally shot in 2013 by a white male after seeking help after a car accident.
