(BOSTON, MA, 11/29/18) — The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced that it has received more than 500 letters of support for a 10-year-old Muslim girl from Framingham, Mass., who was targeted by Islamophobic and threatening letters two weeks ago.

CAIR-MA asked for people of conscience to send the letters to the young girl to support her and to show wider solidarity for the Muslim community.

In response to CAIR-MA’s appeal, letters came in from more than 20 states, including Hawaii. Many emphasized solidarity and support, more than 250 came from fellow students, and a significant number came from members of the Jewish community who described facing similar discrimination.
CAIR-MA asked that the letters be sent to its office in order to preserve the privacy of the child and her family. The office will deliver the letters early next week.
“We’re incredibly heartened by the wider community’s support for this young Muslim student, particularly by the powerful messages from the interfaith community,” said CAIR-MA Director of Community Advocacy and Education Sumaiya Zama. “Despite the climate of animosity and fear that so many Muslims face today, it’s clear that we have allies.”
