The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a new effort by the government of Tajikistan to impose “guidelines” for the attire of Muslim women.
Agence France Presse (AFP) reports that the government is planning to publish a new book updating the country’s dress “guidelines” for women and “tightening the secular state’s policing of women’s clothing.” Those guidelines will outline what women should wear “according to age” and in various settings, including the home.
That nation’s current leader, who has been in power since 1992, has called the wearing of hijab, or Islamic head scarf, a “problem for society.”
Last year, CAIR condemned the passage of a bill in Tajikistan that would ban hijab and other Islamic clothing.
“These ‘guidelines’ can only be viewed in the context of the Tajikistan government’s ongoing efforts to ban Islamic attire and to suppress religious freedom,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “All people should be free to dress as they wish according to their conscience and beliefs.”
Just this week, CAIR called on French lawmakers to reject proposed legislation that would ban the wearing of religiously-mandated attire in sports.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
