CAIR Welcomes Passage of New Hate Crime Ordinance in South Carolina County

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage of a hate crime ordinance by South Carolina’s Orangeburg County Council following its third and final reading.

In July, CAIR welcomed the Orangeburg County Council’s approval of the first reading of the proposed hate crime ordinance.

South Carolina is one of only two states without a hate crime law.

“We welcome the passage of Orangeburg County’s hate crime ordinance as a necessary step to help protect vulnerable communities and to send a clear message that bigotry and violence have no place in our society,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge South Carolina’s state lawmakers to follow the lead of local governments and finally enact a comprehensive statewide hate crime law.”

Last month, CAIR welcomed the passage of a hate crime ordinance by the City of Georgetown, South Carolina.

In June, CAIR welcomed a new hate crime ordinance by that state’s Richland County, the first such measure passed by a county in that state.

Earlier this year, CAIR urged lawmakers in South Carolina to pass a hate crime bill

Washington, D.C., based CAIR has previously expressed support for the passage of the hate crime bill in South Carolina.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
