Woman sprayed with urine-like substance, called racial slur in possible Simi Valley hate crime, police say

On Friday, June 5, a group of juveniles reportedly approached a woman who was sitting in her car with the window down and sprayed her with “gel blasters,” covering her in a substance that she said smelled like urine. When she exited her car to confront the group, one of the members allegedly directed a racial slur at her.

In a social media post, the Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) confirmed that officers are working to identify the perpetrators and stated that the department is committed to “thoroughly investigating all reported incidents, including those involving potential bias.”

In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:

“We strongly condemn this apparent act of hate targeting a community member in Simi Valley. No one should face this kind of dehumanizing attack simply for who they are. We commend the SVPD for its swift response and ongoing efforts to identify those responsible for this possible hate crime.”

To report any bias incidents, contact CAIR-LA’s Civil Rights Department at (714) 776-1177 (ext. 2) or click here to file a report.

CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
