(BALTIMORE, MD, 10/28/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is urging the Montgomery County Muslim community and allies to join a rally outside the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Board of Education meeting this afternoon in Rockville to help seek equality for the Eid holiday on the 2020-21 proposed school calendar, and to support the four community members scheduled to testify in support of this measure.
WHAT: Equality for Eid Rally - MCPS
WHEN: Monday, October 28, 2 p.m.
WHERE: Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education
850 Hungerford Drive
Rockville, MD 20850
CONTACT: CAIR Director of Maryland Zainab Chaudry, email@example.com, 410-971-6062
Last week, it was brought to CAIR’s attention that none of the three proposed academic calendars that the MCPS board is considering for the 2020-21 school year include a day off for students on Thursday, May 13 - the expected date of the Muslim holiday of Eid ul-Fitr.
This despite the fact that in 2015, the board of education agreed to amend the academic calendar after local leaders led by former Maryland State Delegate Saqib Ali and CAIR launched a massive campaign to seek Eid equality for the county’s sizable Muslim population.

“If the MCPS Board of Education erases the Eid holiday from the 2020-21 school calendar, it will undo the progress of past years following more than a decade of advocacy,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Zainab Chaudry. “Thousands of families are directly impacted by this decision, and their voices deserve to be centered and heard.”
Parents, students and community members are encouraged to attend today’s rally, and to also contact the school board of education to provide feedback on their proposed calendars urging them to ensure Eid equality.
