(PHOENIX, AZ, 7/18/18) -- The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an appearance by Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) at a far-right rally in the U.K.
The rally was in support of jailed far-right anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson, who was one of the founders of the hate group English Defence League (EDL), a group known for promoting violent anti-immigrant, Islamophobic hate.

“It is inexplicable for a sitting U.S. congressman to speak at, let alone attend a rally for someone responsible for spreading as much hate and bigotry as Tommy Robinson,” said CAIR-AZ Executive Director Imraan Siddiqi. “We condemn the congressman’s choice to stand with far-right Islamophobic conspiracy-theorists, and call on elected officials from both parties to speak out on this matter.”
In recent years the organization Robinson founded has been linked with numerous violent attacks throughout the U.K. In 2017, a man named Darren Osborne plowed a van through a group of worshippers leaving the Finsbury Park mosque, killing one and injuring many others. Osborne consumed and shared much of the EDL’s anti-Muslim propaganda prior to the attack.

Additionally, a far-right extremist who murdered British MP Jo Cox in 2016 had previously been seen at EDL rallies.
