CAIR-Austin Calls for Stepped-Up Police Efforts After Third Act of Vandalism Targeting Texas Muslim Community

(AUSTIN, TX, 9/18/18) – The Austin, Texas, chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Austin) today called on law enforcement authorities to step up efforts to investigate a third case of vandalism this month targeting institutions associated with the local Muslim community.

The owner of the New Madina Market reported that a vandal smashed the front glass door of his grocery store in the early morning hours of September 17th. Down the road, the North Austin Muslim Community Center was twice vandalized only a few days prior when several glass doors and windows were shattered and the tires of vehicles on the property were punctured.

Earlier this month, CAIR-Austin repeatedly called for a hate crime probe of multiple acts of vandalism at a local Islamic center.

“We condemn this rash of vandalism targeting Muslims in Austin and urge law enforcement authorities to increase their efforts to investigate these disturbing acts, including any possible bias motives against the Muslim community,” said CAIR-Austin Executive Director Maira Sheikh. “Our community members, particularly those who live, worship and own businesses in this North Lamar neighborhood, will not feel safe again until the perpetrators are brought to justice."

She noted that CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights organization recently released an update on anti-Muslim incidents nationwide in the second quarter (April-June) of 2018 indicating that anti-Muslim bias incidents and hate crimes are up 83 and 21 percent respectively, as compared to the first quarter of 2018.

Sheikh urged members of the community to report any bias incidents to law enforcement and to CAIR-Austin at 512-785-7105 or by filing a report at https://tinyurl.com/CAIRAustin
