CAIR Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Harassment Targeting Migrant Workers in Vermont

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/29/2019) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate harassment targeting migrant workers in Addison County, Vt., as a possible hate crime.

A group of people allegedly surrounded farmworkers’ homes, shouted insults and fired guns in an ongoing series of incidents on several nights earlier this month. Police are investigating and have suspects, but no arrests have been made. Authorities do not say whether they believe the crimes are bias-motivated.

“Because of the current anti-immigrant atmosphere promoted by top elected and public officials, we urge local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to treat these incidents as possibly bias-motivated and anti-immigrant attacks,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper

Hooper added CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
