CAIR Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Vandalism Targeting Grand Junction (Colorado) Mosque

(DENVER, CO, 9/18/19) – The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Colorado), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate vandalism targeting a Grand Junction, Colo., mosque as a hate crime.

The sign at the Islamic Centre of Grand Junction was reportedly spray-painted, almost covering the entire sign.

“Because houses of worship nationwide are increasingly targeted by hate, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this vandalism and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said CAIR-Colorado Acting Board Chair Krista Cole. “People of all faiths should be able to gather and pray without fear of intimidation or attack.”

She noted that in 2017, CAIR called for a similar investigation following vandalism targeting a mosque in Fort Collins, Colo.

In 2016 and 2017, CAIR called for stepped-up police protection for mosques in Colorado following threats to houses of worship.
