(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/15/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the resignation of Hal Pierce, chairman of the Combat Sports Authority of Maine, over a series of anti-Muslim Facebook posts made to his personal page.
The Islamophobic posts include the word “infidel” superimposed over an American flag and an image of bacon with the text “Pork Fact #76: People who eat bacon are less likely to blow themselves up.” Another post fearmongers about the “Islamic Domination of the West” conspiracy theory beginning with Muslims pretending to be refugees and ending with the slaughter of all those “who do not submit to Islam.” Yet another post claims a “Moslem” [sic] in Congress will “destroy us from within.”

The body that Pierce heads was established by the Maine Legislature in 2009 to regulate and promote mixed martial arts and boxing competitions, exhibitions and events.
“While Mr. Pierce has the right to his views, however bigoted, it is absolutely necessary that any athletic official remain unbiased regarding athletes of different cultures and faiths,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Mr. Pierce’s Islamophobic views render him incapable of carrying out his duties without bias or favor.”
The Washington-based civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
