CAIR Calls on House GOP to Repudiate Iowa Rep. King for Joking About China Force-Feeding Pork to Uyghur Muslims

Muslim civil rights group urges lawmakers to support the Bipartisan Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019 (H.R.649, S.178)

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8-27/19) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Republican House members to strongly repudiate and condemn Rep. Steve King (R-IA) for joking about reports that Uyghur Muslims in Chinese concentration camps are being sterilized and force-fed pork in violation of their religious beliefs.

Reporter Paige Godden of Iowa Starting Line today tweeted that Rep. King made the remarks while speaking at a town hall. Godden tweeted a photo of Rep. King from the townhall with the post: “Congressman Steve King tries to make a joke about China's alleged treatment of Muslims. He said the Chinese are sterilizing Muslim women and making them eat pork. ‘That's the only part of that I agree with,’ King said.  ‘Everyone should eat pork.’”

“We have a deplorable white supremacist in Congress who obviously hates Muslims and thinks it is funny to joke about Uyghur Muslim women in Chinese concentration camps being forced to eat pork and be sterilized. Republican leaders need to make clear once and for all that Islamophobia will not be tolerated in their ranks,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “If King had joked about any other religious minority in concentration camps suffering the same humiliation he would have been kicked out of the Republican Party.”

McCaw noted that last year, King bizarrely stated in a Breitbart News radio interview that Muslims in American meatpacking plants were processing pork products because, “it helps send them [Americans of other faiths] to hell and it must make Allah happy” and that “I don’t want people doing my pork that won’t eat it, let alone hope I go to hell for eating pork chops.”

CAIR is also urging lawmakers in the House and Senate to support the bipartisan Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019 (H.R.649, S.178), sponsored by Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019 was introduced in both chambers of Congress in response to reports of gross human rights violations by Chinese officials against the country’s Uyghur population, including the mass internment of over one million persons, pervasive high-tech surveillance across the Xinjiang province, and the systemic denial of the freedoms of expression, religion, and movement.

The bill also:

  • Calls for the imposition of sanctions on China under the International Religious Freedom Act
  • Urges the application of sanctions against specific Chinese government officials under the Global Magnitsky Act
  • Asks the Secretary of Commerce to consider prohibiting the sale of U.S.-made goods to Chinese state agents in the Xinjiang province
  • Calls on U.S. companies operating in Xinjiang to publicly assert that their commercial activities are not contributing to human rights violations
  • Calls on the Secretary of State to consider creating a special position, the Special Coordinator for Xinjiang, to coordinate the U.S. response to these human rights violations
  • Calls on the Secretary of State to submit a report detailing the number of persons detained in re-education camps, the conditions in those camps, and the surveillance methods used by authorities in the region

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
