CAIR Calls on Idaho GOP to Repudiate Candidate’s Anti-Muslim ‘Muzzie’ Slur

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/3/18) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy and civil rights organization, called on the Idaho Republic Party to repudiate an anti-Muslim slur used by a GOP candidate in that state.

Kevin Rhoades, a Boise Republican legislative candidate, wrote, “happy to delete another American hating muzzie,” as he posted a photo of another Idahoan he blocked on his public Facebook page. “Of course he lives here and benefits from our great nations’ [sic] tax benefits,” Rhoades wrote about the man. “But he hates people like you. His book teaches him to.”

Following media inquiries, Rhoades deleted the post and wrote: “Apparently my last post was a bit too much for the socialist left.”

“With the rise of Donald Trump and his empowerment of Islamophobes, white supremacists and racists of all stripes, we have witnessed a related spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric and policies by political candidates, public officials and policy-makers,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The Republic Party in Idaho must repudiate this use of bigoted slurs to target an American religious minority.”

Yesterday, CAIR’s Massachusetts chapter condemned a series of Islamophobic mailers targeting congressional candidate Tahirah Amatul-Wadud.

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2018 Civil Rights Report, “Targeted,” which showed a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents against American Muslims from 2016 to 2017, and a 15 percent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes in that same time period.
