CAIR: Civil Rights, Community Groups Call on Maryland Governor to Declare October 17 Annual ‘Statewide Day of Public Service’ to Honor Rep. Cummings’ Memory

(BALTIMORE, MD, 10/17/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP today issued a joint call to Governor Larry Hogan to declare October 17 annually as “Statewide Day of Public Service” in honor of Rep. Elijah Cummings’ memory.

The U.S. congressman serving Maryland’s 7th congressional district passed away this morning at Johns Hopkins’ Gilchrist Hospice Care due to “complications from long-standing health issues.”

“Congressman Cummings was a dedicated, principled and fearless champion for truth and justice whose legacy is rooted in civil rights and public service,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “One of the best ways to honor his memory is by investing our time and resources in service to help defend the democracy he fought tirelessly to protect.”

“Throughout his career, Congressman Cummings consistently used his platform and voice to speak truth to power, fight for our democracy and advocate for disadvantaged communities,” said NAACP-MSC President Gerald Stansbury. “Designating October 17 as ‘Public Service Day’ in Maryland will help ensure that his legacy lives on.”

Indivisible Baltimore, Harford County Caucus of African-American Leaders, Harford County Voices for Racial Change, and the Harford County Democratic Central Committee are among the many organizations who have also joined the call.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
