CAIR-Colorado Calls for Apology from Lawmaker for Liking Islamophobic Post

(DENVER, CO, 9/13/19) – The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Colorado), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for an apology from Colorado Senator Vicki Marble (R-Ft. Collins) after she liked an Islamophobic post on Facebook.

This week, Sen. Marble liked a post with an image of the burning World Trade Center and the statement, “Every time a Moslem (sic) stands up in Congress and tells us they will change the Constitution, impeach our President, or vote for Socialism, remember you said you would never forget. They said they would destroy us from within.”

When asked why she liked the post, the Senator stated that she did so “to say thanks for posting or let the person know I read it. . .I like hearing people express their views. I need to know what’s on their minds. It is part of being a legislator.”

“While Senator Marble’s commitment to hearing different viewpoints is admirable, anti-Muslim bigotry is not and should not be validated by legislators as just a different viewpoint,” said CAIR-Colorado Acting Board Chair Krista Cole. “Would Senator Marble like posts supporting the KKK or neo-Nazis? Islamophobia, just like anti-Semitism or bigotry of any kind, should not be tolerated and we call on the Senator to immediately apologize.”

In July, CAIR welcomed the resignation of a Pennsylvania GOP official over vitriolic and violent Facebook posts about Muslims.

The Washington-based civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
