CAIR Condemns Racist, Islamophobic, Anti-Immigrant Postcard Distributed in Idaho

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/7/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a racist, Islamophobic, homophobic and anti-immigrant postcard distributed in North Idaho.

The postcard depicts three human rights leaders in Coeur d’Alene, including Mayor Steve Widmyer, as clowns holding balloons that mock their dedication to building an inclusive community. Beneath the three leaders, a number of racist, Islamophobic and stereotypical caricatures of various minority communities.

The two “Muslim” figures show a woman wearing a burqa and a man wearing a suicide vest. The other figures include an African-American man with the face of a primate, a gang member meant to represent immigrants and an offensive depiction of transgender woman.

“Intentional attempts to stigmatize minority communities and sow societal division are reprehensible and have no place in Idaho or anywhere in our nation,” said CAIR Communications Coordinator Ayan Ajeen. “America is what it is today in large part due to the contributions of minority communities.”

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
