CAIR-DFW Applauds Restaurant’s Banning of Islamophobe

UPDATE: Waiter admits making up story about customer who called him a terrorist and didn't tip

Customer banned after writing ‘we don’t tip terrorist’ on receipt

(DALLAS, TEXAS, 7/19/2018) – The Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is applauding Saltgrass Steak House for promptly banning a customer who left a hateful message about a server’s assumed religious identity on his receipt.

On July 15, Khalil Cavil posted a photo on his Facebook Timeline showing a receipt on which a customer wrote “We don’t tip terrorist” and circled the server’s Arabic name, which translates to “Friend” in English. The post created an uproar online, receiving more than 7,500 comments, 19,000 shares and 26,000 reactions.

Cavil commented: “Last night at work I received this note from one of my tables. At the moment I didn’t know what to think nor what to say, I was sick to my stomach. I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists.”

According to Odessa American Online, Saltgrass Steak House released a statement saying “We stand by and support our employee. Racism of any form is unacceptable and we have banned this customer from returning to our establishment.”

“It’s important to recognize people and organizations when they take a stand against Islamophobia, racism and hatred in any form,” said John Janney, executive director of CAIR-DFW. “We hope that others follow this example because it truly makes a difference in society.”

Cavil is planning to attend college in Dallas later this year, at which time Janney said he would like to meet with him and personally thank him for standing up to hate.

Janney said people experiencing anti-Muslim bias can submit an incident report on the CAIR-DFW website: https://cairdfw.org/incident-report/

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
