(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/16/20) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed concern about possible “white power” hand signs shown in a photo of Washington, D.C., firefighter recruits.
The photo, apparently taken last year, shows D.C. Fire and EMS recruits using a gesture similar to the "OK" hand sign, which is often used by racists to signal "white power." Some commentators say the recruits could have been playing the "Circle Game," which uses the same symbol.

“Given all the public discussion of this particular hand gesture, those using it should know its racist implications,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “This incident raises sufficient concerns to warrant concrete steps to determine the motive of the recruits and to take appropriate remedial actions.”
Last month, CAIR welcomed the firing of 37 West Virginia government workers who participated in a Nazi salute photograph.
