(BALTIMORE, Md., 7/31/2019) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed solidarity with the Christian community in Maryland after neo-Nazi and racist graffiti was found on a sign at a Marriottsville, Md., church.
Police said someone spray-painted Nazi swastikas and offensive language on the Stoney Ridge Missionary Baptist Church sign and on the church itself. While Missionary Baptist churches in the area are predominantly African-American, Stoney Ridge is not predominantly African-American.

“These hateful acts are often a direct consequence of the toxic rhetoric emboldened by top level officials in our own government,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “Houses of worship are sanctuaries that deserve to be protected. We call on elected leaders to aggressively repudiate racism by demonstrating inclusivity and tolerance through their words and actions.”
Chaudry added, CAIR and the American Muslim community have in the past expressed solidarity with Jewish, Christian, Native American, African-American, and Sikh communities in New York, Indiana, New Mexico, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, Alabama, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Ohio, Texas, and other states following acts of hate, threats, violence, vandalism, arson, or bombings.

The Washington-based civil rights organization is urging all houses of worship and faith-based and advocacy organizations to take extra security precautions as outlined in its "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety" booklet. The advice in CAIR’s security publication is applicable to all institutions, regardless of organizational mission.
