CAIR-FL: Argument Escalates - Is it Hate Crime?

CAIR-FL: ARGUMENT ESCALATES; IS IT HATE CRIME?

Sabura Rashad and Tom Poyma agree about one thing: After her yard sale Saturday, the two were involved in an argument that got out of control.

Rashad, 33, who is Muslim and African-American, claims that Poyma yelled racial slurs at her, tried to remove her head-covering and almost ran her over with his car.

Poyma said the dispute began when he criticized Rashad's yard sale for cluttering up the curbside near the Lamplighter on the River mobile home park, where they both live. He denied allegations of physical violence.

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, described the incident as a hate crime. "There's no excuse for it whatsoever," he said on Sunday.

The group has contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the FBI about the incident, he said. Because of conflicting evidence and witness statements, the Sheriff's Office plans to turn the investigation to the State Attorney's Office, spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
