The 11th annual Arab Muslim American Federation Ramadan Iftar was held on Sept. 27. Ramadan is the holiest time of the year for Muslims and is observed through a month of fasting during daylight hours. Iftar is the nightly breaking of the fast through evening meal. This year, Ramadan began on Sept. 11 and will end on Oct 11.
There were two honorees, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Samia Halaby, an artist and long-time Palestinian human rights activist. CAIR is an organization whose mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower Muslim Americans and promote justice.
Local officials who attended include Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Congresswoman Yvette Clark, city Council Member Vincent Gentile and state Senator Martin Golden.
