(HOUSTON, TX, 1/4/2018) – The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today joined the African-American community in calling for a hate crime probe of the deadly shooting that resulted in the death of a child.
On December 30, seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes was shot and killed in front of her three sisters and mother outside a Houston Walmart. Authorities are looking for a red pickup truck that was caught on camera and the suspect is described as a bearded slender white man in his 40s wearing a red hoodie. The Harris Country Sheriff’s Office released a sketch of the shooting suspect on Thursday.

Civil rights attorney and activists are demanding that the deadly attack be investigated as a hate crime.
“This heartbreaking and senseless shooting of an innocent girl must be investigated as a possible bias-motivated attack,” said CAIR-Houston Executive Director Arsalan Safiullah.
He noted an increase in bias-motivated attacks and hate crimes against minority communities since the election of Donald Trump as president.
