CAIR-Houston to Hold 5th Annual Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium

websitelogo(HOUSTON, TEXAS, 11/10/15) – On Saturday, November 14, the Houston chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-Houston) will hold its 5th Annual Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium (MYLS) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Masjid El Farouq (1207 Conrad Sauer, Houston, Texas, 77043).

The Symposium focuses on leadership, activism and service as it prepares the next generation of servant leaders and activists. This year’s MYLS will host high school juniors and seniors, college freshman and sophomores, as well as young professionals. Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills that can immediately be transferred into positive civic action.

MYLS topics include: community coalition building, engaging elected officials, grassroots advocacy, public speaking, and media engagement.

This year's keynote speaker is Farris Barakat, brother of Chapel Hill shooting victim Deah Barakat, and executive director of The Light House Project.” His keynote presentation will address ways to give back to the community, and he will share how he is carrying on the legacy of his family, Deah, Yusor and Razan, through The Light House Project.

The MYLS program will end with an open mic session hosted by Houston’s own, Muslim Artists' Collective! (Be sure to sign up in the registration form to perform.)
