Mark Martinez has been friends with Michael Mulcahy since they were in theater together as kids. So even though he doesn’t live in San Jose, he was handing out campaign literature Saturday while Mulcahy worked the crowd at the Tamale Festival, as the race for mayor of San Jose rushes toward the election Tuesday.

Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez, Councilmen Chuck Reed and Dave Cortese, and deputy district attorney David Pandori — along with their supporters — were just as busy. The candidates picked up the phone, put on their walking shoes, or chose among the Tamale Festival, the Burbank Neighborhood Jamboree or the summer picnic of the Council on American Islamic Relations.
