Ending months of negotiation, Morton Grove has reached agreement with a Muslim group that will allow it to build a mosque, village officials said Tuesday.

The agreement, reached with help from the U.S. Department of Justice, will allow the Muslim Community Center to request a special-use permit to build a mosque for 525 worshipers, expand its education facility and include parking for up to 224 vehicles.

The agreement still faces procedural hurdles. A majority of trustees must authorize the mayor to sign it, and after that, the Planning Commission has to approve it.

But if the agreement passes without significant changes, community center officials say they will drop a federal lawsuit against the village.

“It’s a reasonable compromise,” said Mohammed Kaiseruddin, president of the center.

Nonetheless, legal battles remain. A group of neighbors that opposes the mosque says it will pursue its federal suit against Morton Grove..
