(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/17/19) – The Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the resignation of Independence, Mo., City Council Member Curt Dougherty over a racist remark he made during a council meeting on Monday night.
During a public hearing about medical marijuana facilities, Councilman Dougherty stated that the city has capped businesses before, like “discount smoke shops owned by mostly Middle Easterns [sic] who will sell anything out the back door.”

“This kind of negative stereotyping and racism is completely unbecoming of an elected official and we call for Mr. Dougherty’s immediate resignation,” said CAIR-Kansas Board Chair Moussa Elbayoumy. “Mr. Dougherty’s bigoted statement shows that he is unable to represent a diverse constituency.”
Last week, CAIR called for and received the resignation of a local Pennsylvania GOP official who posted violently Islamophobic Facebook posts.
