(LOS ANGELES, CA, 8/8/2019) – On Friday, Aug. 9, the Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA), along with a coalition of civil rights activists and allies, will hold a rally outside the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles to protest the religious and cultural persecution of Uighur Muslims in that nation’s Xinjiang Province.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, as many as 3 million members of the Uighur Muslim community have been placed in concentration camps in Xinjiang, China.
The Washington Post has reported that Uighur Muslims are also forced to eat pork, drink alcohol and renounce their faith as Muslims. Additionally, the Chinese government has destroyed more than 35 mosques in Xinjiang.

In a statement, CAIR-LA Policy & Advocacy Manager Fayaz Nawabi said:
“It is imperative that we as people of conscience speak in support of the Uighur people as they are having their basic human rights violated by the authoritarian Chinese government.”
The coalition will call on Congress to pass H.R. 1025, H.R. 649, and S. 178 to condemn the racist and Islamophobic actions of the Chinese government and enact sanctions on China until they close the concentration camps in Xinjiang.
Last month, CAIR’s national office joined the Save Uighur Campaign in calling on government officials, corporations, and activists to maintain pressure on China until the Communist Party ends its ethnic cleansing of Uighur Muslims and provides proof that it has done so.
