CAIR-Massachusetts Welcomes Resignation of Islamophobic Official

(BOSTON, MA, 6/24/2019) -- The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA) today welcomed the resignation of North Attleboro Zoning Board of Appeals member Walter Matthis.

Matthis was asked to resign by the North Attleboro Board of Selectmen following his Islamophobic letter to the editor published in the Sun Chronicle on May 1, 2019.

In that letter, Matthis made statements such as: "Let’s see front page stories that depict the brutal side of Islam religion [sic] and how they [sic] treat women. . .I will most likely be classified as Muslimphobic or some other such word to indicate I’m against Islam. . .Yes! I know that this religion is oppressive to women. But this fact is covered up by the politically correct/fake media and the liberals (Democrats) and of course, women’s liberation groups."

After CAIR-MA brought the letter to the editor to the attention of the North Attleborough Board of Selectmen, action was taken to hold Matthis accountable to his Islamophobic views. His resignation was accepted by the Board of Selectmen on June 20.

“The Islamophobic statements made by Walther Matthis were insulting to not only the Muslim residents of North Attleboro but also to the level of professionalism and basic decency expected of elected officials,” said Nazia Ashraful, government affairs director of CAIR-MA. “We welcome the actions taken by the Board of Selectmen to remove Mr. Matthis from his position on the Zoning Board of Appeals.”

She noted that CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
