CAIR-MI Files 10th Discrimination Complaint Against LG Electronics North America

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 6/19/2019) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a local chapter of the nation’s largest civil rights and advocacy organization, today filed its 10th EEOC complaint against LG Electronics North American for racial discrimination at its Hazel Park location.

In May, CAIR-MI filed five complaints of discrimination on behalf of Michigan Muslims  with the EEOC alleging that LG Electronics had engaged in religious and racial discrimination at its Hazel Park location, citing an Islamophobic and racist "safety-training" and disparate bonuses and wage increases for minority and Muslim workers.

Following the announcement of the filing of those complaints, CAIR-MI was contacted by several more workers of LG's Hazel Park location alleging that they had been subjected to discrimination in pay based due to gender and/or race, and further alleging a lack of reasonable accommodations for workers with disabilities. The complaining workers are from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.  

Today, CAIR-MI filed its tenth complaint against LG on behalf of an African-American woman who alleges that, despite the fact that LG used her to train co-workers, she received a substantially lower wage increase and bonus even though she had no discipline or attendance issues and had a substantially similar review as her white male counterparts who received higher bonuses and wage increases. 

"It appears that LG's Hazel Park location is suffering from an atmosphere of racial, gender and religious discrimination, and despite having been notified of the disparate treatment of its employees by administrators, LG has failed to address this issue," said CAIR-MI  staff attorney, Amy V. Doukoure. "Workers who put in an honest day's work should be compensated for their work equally and without regard to their gender, race or religion."
