CAIR-MI Files EEOC Complaint Against Aerospace Company on Behalf of Muslim Employee Who Faced Religious-Based Harassment and Discrimination

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 4/15/19) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint against X-Ray Industries, Inc. on behalf of a Michigan Muslim employee who allegedly faced harassment and unfair discipline from his supervisors because of his faith.

The employee, Mubarak Salam, who works at X-Ray Industries, Inc. in Troy, Michigan, alleges that he was the subject of offensive anti-Muslim harassment from his co-workers and supervisors on several occasions. Salam further asserts that he was unfairly disciplined after asking for a religious accommodation, and later was passed over for advancement opportunities in favor of a less qualified, non-Muslim co-worker.

After trying to assist Salam in obtaining reasonable religious accommodations and assisting him with reporting the harassment he faced, CAIR-MI decided to file a complaint for religious discrimination and harassment when X-Ray Industries decided to discipline Salam instead of providing him with an accommodation or opening an investigation into his treatment.

"No person should have to be the subject of humiliating jokes and discriminatory treatment when they are doing nothing more than trying to earn a living to support their family," said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney, Amy Doukoure. “The discrimination Mr. Salam has faced is simply unacceptable.”

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

In a published report, CAIR noted a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents and a 15 percent increase in hate crimes against American Muslims since Trump took office.
