CAIR-Michigan Calls on Dearborn Officials to Reprimand Employee Over ‘Camel’ Comment on Facebook

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 5/6/19) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the City of Dearborn to reprimand a city employee for a racist comment on Facebook relating to a Somali-American woman recently featured in a national magazine.

Bill Larion who works in the Engineering Division in Dearborn, Michigan recently commented under a media story about Halima Aden, a Somali-American featured in Sports Illustrated, that it is a "Cute picture should be on the cover of Camels are us."

References to camels is an oft-used dehumanizing racial slur used against persons of Arab ancestry and against Muslims and those who are perceived to be Arab.

"We call on Dearborn officials to reprimand this city employee who clearly holds such racist views while working for a city that has almost half of its population comprising of Arab-Americans and Muslims," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.

Walid also stated that Muslim community members in Dearborn are upset about not only this post but also other instances of lack of racial sensitivity within city government.

Earlier today, CAIR released a groundbreaking report, called “Hijacked by Hate: American Philanthropy and the Islamophobia Network,” listing the philanthropic foundations, many of them mainstream, that were used by anonymous special interest donors to funnel almost $125 million to anti-Muslim hate groups between 2014 and 2016.

The report’s authors noted that one outcome of the funding and promotion of anti-Muslim hate and conspiracy theories has been the measurable nationwide increase in often-fatal anti-Muslim hate violence, bullying of children and discrimination. The period covered by the report showed a marked increase in anti-Muslim hate violence and discrimination.
