CAIR-Minnesota Calls for Probe of Bias Motive for Vandalism Targeting St. Paul Mosque

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 12/21/19) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) tonight called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for vandalism targeting a St. Paul Mosque.

A worshiper at Darul Iman mosque found a white male possibly in his 40s inside the mosque early this morning. Worshipers then found a trail of broken glass and apparent hate massages inside the imam’s (religious leader of the mosque) office. Rambling graffiti included “Merry Xmas” and references to “Jesus,” and “God.” Mosque officials believe the damage will cost to $5-7 thousand to repair.

The St Paul Police department has responded to the incident and will increase patrol of mosques in the area.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support repairs to the mosque.

"Because of the religious references in the graffiti and the damage done to the mosque, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this incident,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “These types of incidents serve to increase safety concerns for the Minnesota Muslim community.”

Hussein added that CAIR Minnesota will work with community to increase safety measure of mosques and community centers.
