CAIR-Missouri Welcomes Action Against Police Officer Who Posted Anti-Muslim Facebook Comments

(ST. LOUIS, MO, 9/12/19) – The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Missouri), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed initial action against a police officer in that state who posted anti-Muslim comments on Facebook.

An officer with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety in Sikeston, Mo., has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation after CAIR-Missouri sent copies of the offensive comments to department officials. Those comments included: “I get to choose whom I dislike and it just so happens to be all muslims (sic) and their beliefs.” Other comments included calling for the deportation of American Muslims and calling Islam’s holy text the Quran, “filthy koran [sic],” and Islam a “filthy religion.”

“We thank Sikeston Department of Public Safety officials for taking this matter seriously and acting promptly to take initial action pending the results of their investigation,” said CAIR-Missouri Executive Director Faizan Syed. “This incident is yet another example of the rise in anti-Muslim bigotry we have witnessed in the current toxic and divisive political environment.”

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
