An Islamic advocacy group is asking local law enforcement authorities and the FBI to investigate reported threats against an Inver Grove Heights charter school.
Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy says it began receiving harassing and threatening messages after recent public criticism of the school by a Star Tribune columnist. The columnist asserted that the kindergarten through eighth grade school is not secular.
The columnist’s allegations against the school have since been highlighted on a number of anti-Muslim websites.
Chris Schumacher is a spokesman for the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) said "It is a sad reflection of the level anti-Muslim feeling has reached in our society that agenda-driven accusations by a newspaper columnist apparently result in such hatred directed at innocent students."
Local police have stepped up patrols near the school in regards to the possibility of hate crimes.
