CAIR: Muslim Group Calls on CNN Democratic Debate Moderators to Ask About Muslim Ban, Refugee Admissions

Civil rights group is also urging all Americans to tweet debate moderators to urge they address these vital issues

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/25/19) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, today called on CNN moderators of the second 2020 Democratic primary debate -- Dana Bash, Jake Tapper and Don Lemon -- to question presidential candidates about their plans to address the Muslim Travel Ban and the all-time-low cap on the annual number of refugees admitted into the United States. [NOTE: The second debate will take place in Detroit, Mich. – a city and state home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States.]

CAIR is calling on all Americans who want to hear presidential hopefuls address those pressing issues to tweet the following before the two debates:

.@CNN #DemDebate Moderators @DanaBashCNN @jaketapper @donlemon ask about the #MuslimBan & historic cap on refugees (a cap that may be slashed to 0 in 2020). The 2nd debate takes place in Detroit, Michigan – a city & state home to one of the largest U.S. Muslim populations.

“You can’t hold a presidential debate in in Detroit, Michigan – a city and state that is home to one of the nation’s largest Muslim populations – and not ask candidates about their plans to address the Muslim ban and historically low cap on refugees,” said CAIR Director of Government Affairs Robert McCaw.

McCaw added that while several candidates have already addressed the Muslim Ban, all candidates should be asked directly how they would address the ban and the historic cap on refugees being admitted into the United States – a cap that may be slashed to zero in 2020.

McCaw also noted that as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, CAIR does not endorse any candidate or political party for any office.

In April, CAIR joined a coalition of 127 other national and state African, Arab, Iranian, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian American communities; interfaith partners; and civil, education, human and immigrant rights allies, in a joint letter to all national political parties requesting that they include repealing the Muslim Ban and reversing the all-time-low cap on the annual number of refugees admitted into the United States as signature issues in their 2020 party platforms.
