(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/15/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said a new Trump administration rule that would effectively deny asylum to nearly all migrants who travel by land to enter the country through the Mexican border is part of the president’s “white supremacist and xenophobic agenda.”
The rule, which goes into effect Tuesday, would bar migrants who failed to apply for asylum in the first country they passed through on their way to the border from doing so in the United States. The new regulation would almost exclusively impact Central American families fleeing persecution in their home countries for the U.S.

“President Trump continues to try to institute a white supremacist and xenophobic agenda that has driven other hateful policies like the Muslim Ban and family separation. This racist rule flies in the face of our country’s longstanding commitment to protecting persecuted communities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The courts have already blocked a number of the Trump administration’s unlawful attempts to limit asylum and we expect judges to similarly strike down this latest attack on vulnerable populations simply seeking refuge.”
Last year, CAIR condemned the Trump administration’s use of the Muslim Ban to justify a now court blocked rule denying asylum to migrants not entering the country at an official port of entry.

Yesterday, CAIR condemned a series of racist tweets by President Trump targeting female congresswomen.

CAIR has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president. CAIR has repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic, white supremacist and racist Trump administration policies and appointments.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
