(BALTIMORE, MD, 11/25/19) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s) responsible for the shooting of a Somali Muslim man in Prince George’s County last week.
The victim, Mursal Abukar Ali, was reportedly driving an Uber Wednesday evening and had arrived to the pick-up location near an area metro station when he was shot. Further details surrounding the incident are unclear, and no suspects are in custody. Ali’s family was notified of his condition on Thursday, when he was transported to R Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He sustained life-threatening injuries, and is currently in critical condition.
“An innocent man is fighting for his life while his family is left to process this trauma while they grapple with too many unanswered questions,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “We urge anyone with information about this crime to come forward and contact the Prince George’s County Police Department at (301) 772-4492 and the Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).”
The civil rights organization is in touch with the victim’s family, and has also reached out to law enforcement authorities handling the investigation.
"The Dar-us-Salaam and Al-Huda School community is heart broken for Brother Mursal and his family, and we are offering our prayers and support,” said Dar Us Salaam Mosque Board Member Minhaj Hasan. “We ask the community to help the police find the criminals who did this so they can face justice, and so others can be safe from their evil."
“Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC) asks Allah to give Brother Mursal Abukar Ali a full and speedy recovery,” said PGCMC President Jameel Johnson. “We will communicate to the Prince George’s County Police and the State’s Attorney our expectation and support for their finding, arresting and indicting the individual(s) responsible for the shooting of our brother.”
A gofundme campaign has raised over $40K so far towards medical expenses and support for the family, including Ali’s wife and nine children.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
