Cancellation by the Cleveland Heights/ University Heights Public Library of Peace Action’s screening of the film “Searching for Peace in the Middle East” due to controversy is unfortunate.
Canceling the film and postponing the series is not a helpful approach in a city such as Cleveland with large populations of Palestinian and Jewish Americans. Because the two communities live peaceably here, they should be encouraged to discuss the problems and challenges instead of staying in their respective comfort zones. Closing down a library forum may make the controversy go away temporarily, but it hinders the sustained civil discourse necessary to forge peace.
