SEE: CAIR-OK Third Annual Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium

This year, 70 students between the ages of 16 and 24 from across Oklahoma and North Texas will meet at Oklahoma City's Meinder's School of Business for a weekend of workshops focused on political participation, civic engagement, interfaith partnerships, media advocacy, and community outreach.

On Friday, MYLS participants will be joined by Oklahoman politicians, educators, entrepreneurs, activists, and journalists for a networking dinner at the Great Hall in the Oklahoma City University Center. Among the speakers will be OCU President Robert Henry, CAIR Legislative Director Corey Saylor, and chaplain of the New York City Police Department Imam Khalid Latif.

On Sunday, participants will gather on the floor of the Senate Chamber in the State Capitol for a mock legislative debate discussing current policy issues in Oklahoma with former elected officials. "In the past year, these young activists have heard local politicians smear and mislabel their community and religion. This symposium is about empowering young people to take on their civic responsibility of defining themselves." said CAIR-OK Executive Director Muneer Awad.

CAIR-Oklahoma is a local chapter of America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
