(SACRAMENTO, CA, 09/25/19) – The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV) today condemned anti-Semitic flyers found at the University of California, Davis, campus on Monday.
The leaflets contained a logo for the American Identity Movement, a group formerly called Identity Evropa that’s known as a white supremacist organization. Campus police are investigating.
The incident marks the second consecutive year that anti-Semitic flyers have been reported on the campus.
In a statement, CAIR-SV’s Executive Director Basim Elkarra said:
“We condemn this disturbing display of anti-Semitism at UC Davis. Students must be able to learn in a safe environment free of hate. We as a community must unite to push back and prevent such incidents from occurring. We will continue to stand and defend our fellow community members in the face of hatred and we urge our leaders to speak out against the bigotry being promoted at the highest levels of our society.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community have in the past expressed solidarity with Jewish, Christian, Native American, African-American and Sikh communities nationwide following acts of hate, threats, violence, vandalism, arson or bombings.
The California attorney general reported a 17.4 percent spike in California hate crimes from 2016 to 2017.
CAIR California (CAIR-CA) found that there was a marked rise in anti-Muslim bias incidents in California in 2017, as detailed in its Civil Rights Report. CAIR-CA recorded an 8 percent increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents in 2017 compared to 2016.
Elkarra urged community members to report any bias incidents to law enforcement and to CAIR-SV’s Civil Rights Department at 916-441-6269 or by filing a report at http://bit.ly/cairsvreport.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
