Police are investigating fliers featuring Nazi swastika and ‘threat to kill Muslims’
(SANTA CLARA, CA, 8/22/2017) -- The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) today thanked Alameda, Calif., law enforcement authorities for immediately designating as a “hate incident” the distribution of Nazi-themed fliers threatening to kill Muslims.
CAIR-SFBA says the flyers were discovered on Sunday near the Islamic Center of Alameda, a city just east of San Francisco.
“We are grateful to the Alameda Police Department for responding quickly and professionally to this hate incident,” said CAIR-SFBA Executive Director Zahra Billoo. “We urge public officials, including Mayor Trish Herrera Spencer, to stand with the Muslim community and its allies, making clear that bigotry has no place in our neighborhoods.”
The incident comes just two weeks after a deadly neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., in which one member of the group was filmed crashing his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
In a report released last month, CAIR documented a 91 percent increase in Islamophobic hate incidents since last year’s presidential election. In California alone, more than half of Muslim students report being bullied in school, according to a forthcoming report by CAIR California.
Earlier today, CAIR called the cancellation of a nationwide series of hate rallies previously scheduled for September 9 a “victory over white supremacy and Islamophobia.”
Yesterday, CAIR issued “9 Steps to Dismantle White Supremacy and Islamophobia” in response to both the recent deadly terrorist attack on anti-racist protests in Charlottesville, Va., and the rise in Islamophobic sentiment and hate incidents in recent months.
In response to the recent spike in hate crimes targeting minorities, CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
