(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/15/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on DC Comics to drop a planned series featuring a derogatory depiction of Jesus scheduled for publication later this year.
The series Second Coming is part of DC Comics’ Vertigo line and is scheduled for release on March 6.
An official synopsis for Second Coming states:
“Witness the return of Jesus Christ, as He is sent on a most holy mission by God to learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind by becoming roommates with the world’s favorite savior: the all-powerful super hero Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex! But when Christ returns to Earth, he’s shocked to discover what has become of his gospel—and now, he aims to set the record straight.”
In an interview, the series author said: “The conceit is that God was so upset with Jesus’ performance the first time he came to Earth, since he was arrested so soon and crucified shortly after, that he has kept him locked-up since then.”

In a statement, CAIR said:
“While publishers have the right to distribute any content they wish, even material targeting revered religious figures, they should voluntarily choose to consider and respect the religious views of their diverse readership. We urge DC Comics to drop the Second Coming series.”
CAIR noted that Muslims revere and love Jesus as one of God's greatest messengers. Every time Muslims mention Jesus’ name, they add “peace be upon him.”
The Quran, Islam’s revealed text, states: “Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! God gives thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God.’” (The Holy Quran, 3:45)
In Islam, Jesus speaks from the cradle and, with God’s permission, cures lepers and the blind. (5:110) God also states in the Quran: “We gave (Jesus) the Gospel and put compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers.” (57:27)
Islam’s Prophet Muhammad called Jesus God’s “spirit and word” and once said: “Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
