(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/15/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a move by House GOP leaders to strip Rep. Steve King’s (R-IA) committee assignments over comments in support of white supremacism.=
[NOTE: Yesterday, Representative Jim Clyburn (D-SC) introduced a resolution condemning King’s comments and denouncing white nationalism and supremacy. The resolution, which already has four cosponsors, could be voted on as early as today.]
In a New York Times interview, King claimed the “culture of America” is based on the values brought over by white Europeans. He said: "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization—how did that language become offensive?. . .Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"

Last week, CAIR called on the Republican Party to eject Rep. Steve King (R-IA) for those comments.

“We welcome this move by House GOP leaders as recognition – finally – that white supremacy has no place in the halls of Congress,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Further measures should now be taken to eject Mr. King from the party and Congress.”
Last year, CAIR joined 139 other organizations in calling on then House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to censure King after he was caught calling Mexican immigrants “dirt” in a taped conversation with supporters.
CAIR has documented numerous other incidents of King engaging in anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, and White supremacist rhetoric.
In 2015, CAIR condemned King’s bizarre claim that refugees who “do hajj to Mecca” cannot assimilate into other cultures like their Christian counterparts. The anti-Muslim remarks were made at a rally for GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
