Catholics and Muslims have donated $23,700 thus far in a collection for the relief effort in cyclone-stricken Myanmar, South Florida leaders of the two faiths announced Wednesday.
The aid is for victims in the southeast Asian nation who were hit May 3. The appeal, announced on May 14, is the first joint relief campaign of the Archdiocese of Miami and a coalition of mosques in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. . .
Of the total thus far, $15,000 came from Catholic parishes and individuals, the rest from 10 South Florida mosques. Three other mosques plan to donate by the end of the week, said Altaf Ali, South Florida executive director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. (MORE)
