FBI Asked to Probe Online Death Threat Targeting CAIR Executive Director

Muslim civil rights group urges Twitter to drop account of person making threat referencing murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/31/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the FBI to investigate a death threat posted on Twitter targeting CAIR’s National Executive Director Nihad Awad and referencing murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

CAIR said the threat, written in Arabic and posted on Twitter Dec. 31 by a person using the Twitter handle @salmanalhila1, stated (translation): “And I wish to see you one day, we’ll settle scores well, maybe your body will be like Khashoggi’s.” [NOTE: The @salmanalhila1 account has almost 100,000 followers.]

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018. The CIA concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally ordered his murder and dismemberment. Khashoggi’s remains have yet to be found.

Awad was a friend and colleague of Khashoggi and worked with him on efforts to bring justice and representative government to the Middle East.

In a statement, CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas said:

“Given the relationship between Mr. Awad and Mr. Khashoggi, the FBI and Twitter must take this death threat seriously. We ask the FBI to identify this Twitter user and take appropriate law enforcement action against the person who made this threat. Twitter should remove this account for violating its stated code of conduct.”
